Celebrating 50 Years: Hank Aaron’s Milestone Home Run in Atlanta

On April 8, 1974, Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was abuzz with anticipation as dignitaries like Sammy Davis Jr. and future President Jimmy Carter gathered alongside media figures like Vin Scully and a young Craig Sager to witness Hank Aaron’s historic home run. In his autobiography ‘If I Had a Hammer,’ Aaron noted the absence of the President and the Commissioner due to the Watergate scandal.

Amid a simmering feud between the Braves and Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, Aaron tied Babe Ruth’s record with his 714th home run on Opening Day in Cincinnati. Despite Kuhn’s insistence, Aaron’s team was determined to bring the record-breaking moment to Atlanta.

In the home opener, Aaron wasted no time, launching Al Downing’s pitch over the left-center-field fence. This iconic 715th home run remains one of sports’ greatest moments.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Aaron’s historic feat, Truist Park will host Dusty Baker, Ralph Garr, Tom House, and other teammates who witnessed the unforgettable moment. House, who caught the ball in the bullpen, proudly handed it to Aaron at home plate.
